Sudbury and Suffolk’s Radical History - A Talk By Ashley Cooper

1776902400
Sudbury and Suffolk have a long and often surprising tradition of independent thinking, resistance, and reform. Next month, the Sudbury Society welcomes back local historian, author, and farmer Ashley Cooper for an illustrated talk exploring “Sudbury and Suffolk’s Radical History.” Inspired by the late Andrew Phillips’ much‑loved History Evenings, Ashley traces a thousand years of radical action, from the Domesday Book to the Victorian era, through the lives, beliefs, and struggles of the people who shaped our region. His stories include the Marian martyrs of the 1550s, the motivations of early Suffolk migrants to America, George Crabbe’s The Village, and a Sudburian’s protest against the harsh realities of the nineteenth‑century workhouse. This promises to be a rich and engaging evening that brings our local past vividly to life.
