These applications relate to an extremely prominent grade 2 Listed building. It has recently featured on the Society's Buildings at Risk Register owing to the lack of recent maintenance and its declining condition.
The building belies its external appearance as the freehold of the building is divided in a manner that creates flying freeholds.
The Current proposals are for a change of use to a single residential unit and extension. This proposal will involve less internal alteration, which will have less impact on the internal period features that form part of the listing.
The well regarded architects have proposed a very modern extension with materials not yet currently used in Sudbury linked to a careful retention and refurbishment of the Regency facade and entrance portico. From King st this modern extension will not be visible and shows that Good modern design can enhance a listed building far better than a pastiche extension. The much-admired extension to Gainsborough 's House is another example of the proposed approach but there the extension has a far greater visual impact on the Conservation area. We believe that these two buildings will have a successful and beneficial impact on the towns architectural heritage.
The Sudbury Society therefore fully support this application
