Like the adjacent Coach House, Farthings was originally connected with Prospect House, the doctor's surgery on Friars Street. Farthings was the gardener's cottage and takes its name from the gardener in the mid-20th Century. The core of the building appears to be mid 19th century although it has had a number of extensions and a recent sympathetic renovation. The warm red brick complements the old walls nearby and the house serves as a focal point at that end of the Lane.
