Plough Lane once led out from the former Saxon centre of the town into open fields. Perhaps that was how it acquired its name. Rows of red brick Victorian cottages follow the narrow curving line of the lane; unsurprisingly some contain the remnants of earlier timber framed buildings. Some of the cottages have painted walls or modern replacement windows but not to the point of affecting the overall character of the lane. All the properties from Straw Lane to Stour Street are therefore placed on the Local List.
