An important Victorian landmark, dominating this busy corner of Station Road and Great Eastern Road. The more expensive local white bricks were used for the detailing, contrasting with the cheaper background reds. Robert Kirby ran what was then the Great Eastern Hotel in 1874 and his initials were once visible, picked out in white bricks on the Station Road frontage. (July 2019 - the building has been gutted and is being converted into apartments. Little survives except the facade and even then Kirby's initials and his initials have been removed to make way for a window. A new interior structure is now visible rising up behind the long parapet.)
